Domestic violence in male same-sex relationships

On Behalf of | Jan 4, 2019 | Same-Sex Couples & Divorce |

When many Texas residents consider domestic violence, they may think about heterosexual couples. However, domestic violence also affects same-sex couples.

Men in same-sex relationships experience more domestic violence than people may realize. WebMD says that a recent study examined domestic violence among male same-sex relationships. The study examined the relationships of 160 couples. Incidents with emotional or physical abuse took place among 46 percent of these couples. The author of the study said that the rates of sexual or physical abuse among male couples seem to be similar to those seen among heterosexual couples.

Men who are in same-sex relationships may sometimes think that domestic violence only consists of physical abuse. According to The National Domestic Violence Hotline, physical abuse, such as choking and slapping, is one form that domestic violence can take. However, it is important for men to understand that abuse can come in many forms. Some men may experience sexual coercion and feel they owe their partner sexual contact. Others may find themselves being emotionally abused. In this situation, a man may be unable to leave his home because his partner will not let him leave, or his partner may keep him away from friends and family members.

Domestic violence can also take the form of digital abuse. This means that a man might send his partner insulting messages through social media or try to control his partner’s social media friends. Digital abuse can also occur when a man insists on monitoring his partner’s cellphone or social media profiles. Some men may not always see some behaviors as abuse. However, it is important for them to understand that controlling behavior can be a sign of an unhealthy relationship. It is a good idea for men to seek help if they think they are experiencing domestic violence.
