Father’s rights to school records

On Behalf of | Jan 30, 2017 | Fathers' Rights |

A father has certain rights and responsibilities that must be given importance when raising a child. As a father, you have the right to review as well as collect your child’s school records. For the wellbeing of the child and his or her education, you may be allowed to obtain useful information from the school.

As a father, you may wish to go through your child’s school records to guide him or her through the academic years. According to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), custodial and noncustodial parents may be granted access to their child’s school records. As a father, you may also have the privilege of revising the records. Moreover, you may also file a complaint with the department of education, if you have reason to believe quality education is not being provided by the school.

School records hold information that is directly associated with the student and is managed by the school or education board. If you are in middle of a court order concerning custody rights and are prohibited from taking care of the child, certain state laws may not allow you to access these school records.

If you require help in understanding your rights as a father when getting access to your child’s school records, then you may benefit from hiring a family law attorney. A skilled lawyer may also provide you with accurate information that is in line with federal and state laws, so you are aware of the rights and regulations before you request the records.
