Texas implementing new process aimed at child support delinquency

The state of Texas is rolling out a new tactic designed to force payments from parents who are behind on child support. The office of the Texas Attorney General began sending out notices this month warning parents that they will be unable to renew their vehicle registration if they are behind on payments by at least six months. The attorney general’s office can already take away licenses for non-paying parents, but now the DMV will start refusing service as well.

Proponents of the new measures say it’s yet another way to turn the screws on “deadbeat” parents who refuse to meet their child support obligations, but not everyone is a fan. Detractors are worried that these tougher penalties will make it impossible for well-meaning mothers and fathers to get to work. Without a steady income with which to pay support, it’s the children who would eventually suffer.

One thing is for sure: Texas is no slouch when it comes to collecting. In fact, the Lonestar state claims it collected almost $4 billion in child support payments the last fiscal year, a number that it says puts Texas at the top in the nation in that category.

Regardless of how you feel about the new rules that are being implemented, the fact is that Texas takes child support seriously. If you owe child support and are struggling to make payments, you may want to contact an attorney to see about a modification. Conversely, if you aren’t receiving the payments you’re due, an attorney can help you get what you’re owed.
