There is no doubt that military families face a great number of challenges during periods of deployment. One of the most significant impacts it has on a family may be that of divorce. According to certain studies, lengthy periods of deployment have been linked to an increase in divorce rates.

According to one study, couples married prior to the attacks on September 11, 2001 were more likely to head for divorce within a few years of marriage if either spouse had a deployment lasting longer than a year. While all the contributing factors may not be known, it was found that military couples who married after September 11, 2001 had a lower divorce rate.

Numerous studies have been done regarding deployment and divorce rates. These studies have concluded that military couples that have experienced more cumulative months apart due to a lengthy deployment have a higher risk of divorce. In fact, an astounding 97 percent of military divorces occurred after a long deployment period. A majority of these were initiated by women following their return. The same study found that military families with children experienced divorce at a lower rate than all others.
