Child support obligations extend to medical expenses

On Behalf of | Apr 3, 2016 | Child Support |

If you are receiving child support, you are well aware of all the expenses that the money goes toward. These funds are likely to pay for critical necessities such as food, clothing and shelter for your child. But sometimes unforeseen events transpire that are responsible for taxing your household budget with unexpected, and often costly, expenses.

If your child requires medical, dental or vision treatment, you may be facing out-of-pocket costs for such things as prescriptions, deductibles, co-pays and other items not covered by insurance. But you should not be left to pay the entirety of these expenses by yourself. These expenses are considered part of a parent’s child support obligation.

So if you need your child’s other parent to contribute to paying for unreimbursed or uncovered medical expenses, there are a number steps you may have to take. First, keep in mind that you must follow all procedures established by your child support agreement.

You want to Inform the other parent of the expenses, either by reaching out informally or providing written notice. You also should keep your records in good order. This means to hang on to all the receipts and bills pertaining to the treatment. You should also make copies for safekeeping and distribution if required.

Hopefully, your child’s other parent will voluntarily help pay the child’s medical expenses. But if not, you may have to have the matter settled by the courts. If such is the case, a Texas child support attorney may be able to act on your behalf in making sure that you get the funds to which you are entitled.
