It is important to negotiate custody terms you can live with

Most parents want what is best for their children. Yet, even parents who have a strong relationship with one another may have disagreements regarding specific issues. But if the parents do not get along and are not living under the same roof, then getting on the same page on important aspects of a child’s life can be very difficult. This is why it is so important when working out an initial child custody agreement that the terms be clear and fair to both parents.

Sometimes, in the interest in getting things squared away quickly and with a minimum of conflict, a noncustodial parent may simply agree to the first set of terms he or she is presented with. This is fine if the terms grant the noncustodial parent the right to help make decisions about the child’s health, schooling and other significant matters.

But trying to make things simple and non-confrontational in the short run may bring about problems as time goes on. For this reason, you want to carefully consider all the terms of your agreement. And if you are not satisfied with what is being offered, you may wish to continue with negotiations until you find the conditions amenable. And often it is very helpful to have strong legal representation on your side of the negotiation table.
