Rosie O’Donnell settles custody issues with her ex

Eventually, it may come to pass that the phrase “gay marriage” will only be used in history books. Now that the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that same-sex couples have the same marital rights as different-sex couples, there is actually less reason for the phrase to exist. So, perhaps one day marriage will be commonly viewed as a union between two people who love each other and there will be no need to make any distinctions regarding sexuality.

One thing that will become more obvious as time passes is that same-sex married couples have the same struggles as their heterosexual counterparts. And just as it is now more common than ever for gay couples to marry and have children, so too will it become more common for them to divorce and have custody issues.

Take, for example, the case of entertainer Rosie O’Donnell and her now ex-spouse Michelle Rounds. It was recently reported that Ms. O’Donnell and Ms. Rounds were able to reach an amicable divorce settlement as well as coming to terms regarding custody of their adopted daughter.

Ms. Rounds had originally filed for sole-custody of the two-year-old girl. But after negotiations, which took place in a Manhattan courtroom, it was decided that she and Ms. O’Donnell would share custody. Speaking to reporters on the matter, Ms. O’Donnell expressed that both she and Ms. Rounds were happy with the outcome of the settlement.

The divorce process for gay couples is not that much different from that of the process carried out for straight couples. Perhaps the biggest difference comes in the area of child custody. This is primarily because adoption usually plays a role when gay couples or individuals become parents.

If you are a gay individual and a parent who is in the process of divorcing your partner, you may want to seek the advice and guidance of an attorney who understands your specific legal needs.
