Steps to get child support

If you are going through a divorce in Texas and need to secure child support, there are several steps you should take. We at the Law Offices of Keith E. Holloway can help you accomplish everything you need to do and fight for your rights during your court case.

According to the Office of Child Support Enforcement, establishing paternity is the first thing that should be done. If you were married when your children were born, your ex-spouse is likely already named on the birth certificate. If you were not married, your co-parent will need to submit to genetic testing or voluntarily acknowledge paternity.

Next, you will need to request a child support order. This will depend on your ex-spouse’s income and how many children you have. If your co-parent refuses to follow the court’s directions and pay the recommended amount, there are other ways to secure payment. If your ex-spouse receives a paycheck, court officials can withhold the amount that needs to be paid. Other options include placing a lien on any property owned or subtracting the owed amount from tax refunds. Any federal payments received can also be intercepted and adjusted to ensure that you get the child support payments you deserve.

If your child support payments still cannot be secured through these methods, court officials can deny passports and report the debt to credit bureaus. In some cases, any professional, occupational or driver’s licenses can be revoked. For more information on this topic, please visit our web page.
