Acknowledging paternity can give fathers parenting rights

On Behalf of | Sep 25, 2015 | Fathers' Rights |

It has become extremely common for households with children to have only one parent. But at the same time, it continues to get more difficult for a single parent to make ends meet. The prices for everything from housing to food just keep getting higher and higher. From an economic standpoint, it can be extremely important for both of a child’s parents to contribute to the household’s expenses.

Quite often, it is the mother who maintains primary custodial duties in a single parent home. And if the parents were never married, it may be necessary that issues of paternity be worked out so that a father can pay into the family’s coffers and also maintain a personal relationship with his child.

One of the most common scenarios unmarried individuals, who have had a child together face, is establishing the father’s legal right to be part of the child’s life. But this can be accomplished if the father files an acknowledgement with the Texas Department of State Health Services.

Should a man who wishes to be deemed a child’s father opt to not file an acknowledgement, he will be considered an “alleged father” and will not be granted the same legal relationship as is given to an acknowledged father. This means an alleged father will have to go through the court system if he hopes to gain a fuller set of parental rights.

Attorney Keith E. Holloway has experience in offering fathers advice on how to best navigate the legal system.  The goal is to help both parents create circumstances that are as beneficial to all parties as possible. He is located in San Antonio and is interested in serving your needs.
