The challenges of raising your grandchildren

Like any grandparent in Texas, you love your grandchildren and want what is best for them. However, at the Law Offices of Keith E. Holloway, we know that many grandparents across the country are faced with the unexpected task of raising their grandkids instead of having the pleasure of watching their children raise them. If you have custody of your grandkids, this task can be rewarding, but it also comes with unique challenges.

According to U.S. News & World Report, the phenomenon of grandparents raising their grandchildren is becoming more prevalent in the United States. In 2015, 2.9 million American children lived with their grandparents. As you can expect, this is a difficult challenge. Times are different, socially and financially, than they were when your own children were young. You are older now and may have health issues that can make raising young children a challenge. You might be on a fixed budget, which can complicate your responsibilities. You may have been looking forward to travel and retirement. The grandchildren might also be suffering emotionally by not being able to live with their parents.

There are many reasons that could make it necessary for you to take over the parenting duties. One or both of your grandchildren’s parents might have passed away, or there could be substance abuse or domestic violence in the home. Divorce, parental relocation or financial problems may have necessitated your grandchildren living with you for an extended period. Your child may have been too young or incapable of raising a child.

While these issues can seem overwhelming, you have resources to help. Our page on raising grandchildren can tell you more.
