LGBT history celebrated but same-sex couples still lack rights

As LGBT history is in the process of being made, an observance examines history that has already been written. Not long ago on this blog, we posted a story that demonstrated the apparent increase in support for nationwide legal recognition of gay marriage. In this post, we will spotlight LGBT History Month, which is going on through October.

Every day, throughout the month, the achievements of icons from the LGBT community will be recognized. Each day singles out an individual achiever. Among this year’s icons are Lord Byron, Margaret Cho, Freddie Mercury, Glenn Greenwald and Billie Holiday.

The observance was founded by a high school teacher in Missouri. The month of October was chosen to coincide with public schools being open. Also, observances such as Coming Out Day take place during the month.

This recognition of history is certainly a good way to promote acceptance and understanding of those in the LGBT community. But society still has a way to go in regard to the extending of basic rights for those in committed same-sex relationships.

Many states, Texas included, do not legally recognize gay marriages. This issue presents many problems for those who want to have the same rights and privileges as those who enter the bonds of a heterosexual marriage.

Moreover, complications can arise when a couple who has married in a state that recognizes same-sex marriage moves to a state that does not. This is especially true should the couple find themselves wanting to separate or divorce. Without legal recognition of the marriage, there can be no granting of a divorce.

Should you be in a situation where you cannot successfully dissolve a same-sex marriage, a Texas divorce attorney may be able to help you discover available options.
